East Carolina University's women's swimming and diving team is gearing up for an exciting 2026-27 season with the addition of 11 talented newcomers. This diverse group of swimmers and divers, including eight freshmen and three sophomore transfers, will join a strong returning roster, aiming to build upon the team's impressive third-place finish at the American Conference Championships in February. Isabelle Cameron, a sophomore from Peterborough, England, is a versatile swimmer specializing in breaststroke and the individual medley (IM). Her impressive credentials include competing in the British Olympic trials in 2024 and achieving top-four finishes in the 50, 100, and 200 breaststroke events. Cameron's talent is further highlighted by her top-four ranking in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 200 breaststroke in the Marshall record book.
Alena Gemici, a freshman from Germany, is a sprint and middle-distance freestyle specialist. Her achievements include being a three-time German Championship runner-up with the relay in 2023 and securing first place in the 4x100 free and 4x200 free relays in 2024. Gemici's versatility is evident in her second-place finish in the 200/400 free events at the Eindhoven Qualification Meeting and her North German Championship titles.
Sophie Hay, a sophomore from New Zealand, brings a wealth of distance freestyle expertise. With a top-50 ranking in New Zealand, she competed in eight meets at Washington State, achieving three top-three finishes. Hay's achievements include winning the 1500 Free at the New Zealand Short Course Championships and earning second place in the 1500 Free at the Swimming Auckland Age Group and Open Championships.
Local Talent Shines
The team also welcomes local talent, such as Ashlyn Loftin, a freshman from Marietta, Georgia. Loftin is a breaststroke specialist, having won the 100 breaststroke in 2025 and 2026, and placing third in the 100 butterfly at the state championships. Her regional dominance is evident in her Region 6A 100 breaststroke titles and first place in the 100 butterfly. Loftin's academic achievements include multiple varsity and scholar athlete awards, showcasing her well-rounded excellence.
Orla Macinnes, a sophomore from Edinburgh, Scotland, is a butterfly specialist with a strong track record. She secured 14 top-three finishes and seven event wins in 10 meets at Youngstown State, including first place in the 50 butterfly at the 2026 Horizon League Championships. Macinnes' talent is further recognized by her CSCAA NIC Qualifier status.
Diving into Excellence
The team's diving prowess is exemplified by Lauren McCoy, a freshman from Orlando, Florida. McCoy's achievements include being a four-year state diving finalist, state runner-up in 2024 and 2025, and named MVP in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Her school record-holding status and All-Metro Team recognition solidify her diving excellence.
International Excellence Continues
Eszti Scheffer, a freshman from Hungary, brings a strong backstroke and individual medley (IM) background. Her achievements include third place at the 2022 Hungarian Short Course Youth Championship in the 400 IM and ninth place in the 200 backstroke at the 2025 Hungarian Championship. Scheffer's versatility is evident in her multiple placements at various Hungarian championships.
Aaliyah Schiffel, a freshman from Germany, is a breaststroke and IM specialist with a strong national age group champion record. Her achievements include multiple finals at Nationals Short and Long Course Championships, showcasing her versatility and talent.
Sprinting to Success
Isabel Schroeder, a freshman from Loveland, Ohio, is a sprint freestyle and backstroke specialist. Ranked as Ohio's 13th-ranked recruit by SwimCloud, she achieved sixth-place finishes in the 50 and 100 free events at the OHSAA State Championships in 2025 and 2026. Schroeder's versatility is evident in her YMCA long course National Championship titles and Speedo Winter Junior qualification.
Immersing in Excellence
Maria Shyrikova, a freshman from Ukraine, is an IM specialist with a strong national team background. Her achievements include being a top-20 swimmer in Ukraine and a member of the Ukrainian National Team. Shyrikova's talent is further recognized by her Junior European Championship qualification and Absolute Ukrainian Championship titles.
Versatility and Excellence
Ava Vercollone, a freshman from Phoenix, Maryland, showcases versatility in events like IM, butterfly, and distance freestyle. Her impressive credentials include multiple IAAM All-conference and All-American Awards, as well as the Swimmer of the Year LCM 15-16 and Scholastic All-American recognition. Vercollone's talent is evident in her US All-American status and multiple championship finals.
